‘City in decline’: Whistleblower claims Boston's crime is increasing as Healey and Wu oppose Trump's measures

Concerns about rising crime have surfaced from immigration shelters in Massachusetts, especially in Boston. Democratic leaders in the state have intensified their opposition to federal efforts aimed at addressing crime. John Featherton, who operates a state-funded immigration shelter in Marlborough, has voiced alarm about increasing incidents of violence and crime since the shelter system was restructured under Democratic Governor Maura Healy’s administration.

Featherton highlighted troubling patterns like domestic violence and sex trafficking occurring within the hotel shelter setup. “The Healy hotel was notorious for domestic violence and sex trafficking. Unfortunately, we’ve reported cases of rape,” he remarked. “Now, it’s opened to all cities in Massachusetts.”

Healy’s resistance stems from her opposition to the previous administration’s strict immigration and crime policies, which she criticized as “political theatre.” She remarked on social media that “we don’t need or want his intervention here,” referring to former President Trump.

Featherton, however, criticized the governor’s stance as naive and hazardous, arguing that her approach fails to recognize the reality of rising crime. “Boston is indeed facing challenges; it’s not the great city it used to be,” he expressed, noting the visible increase in crime, particularly drug-related issues.

In contrast, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu defended the city’s response to crime, indicating they follow all laws while also emphasizing the importance of safeguarding Boston’s diverse community. “This city is incredible, and we will not retreat from the commitments we’ve made,” she stated.

Featherton, aligning more with a push for enhanced law enforcement presence, expressed frustration over elected officials not prioritizing public safety. He wishes to engage in sensible discussions about crime solutions with locals and believes that the media misrepresents the reality of federal interventions.

The divide on leadership approaches continues, as acting ICE director Todd Lyons has promised to strengthen federal law enforcement presence in the city. Meanwhile, Healy and Wu’s offices did not respond promptly to inquiries regarding this issue.

A White House spokesperson reacted to the situation, suggesting that Democratic leaders would benefit more from focusing on crime solutions rather than political posturing. They implied that the reality of crime varies greatly from place to place, and solutions shouldn’t be partisan.
