Dave Portnoy criticizes the 'joke' SEC after Alabama's defeat to Florida State

Disappointing Start for Alabama Crimson Tide

The opening week for Alabama didn’t go quite as fans hoped.

Many are viewing the Crimson Tide’s defeat against Florida as a jarring wake-up call. The 31-17 loss in Tallahassee has raised eyebrows and stirred conversations.

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy chimed in, making a pointed remark about the SEC after the game. “I told everyone who hears FSU is easy money. The SEC is a joke,” he expressed on social media, not long after appearing on Fox’s “Big Noon Kickoff” ahead of a game in Texas.

Meanwhile, Florida’s quarterback, Tommy Castellanos, who transferred from Boston University in June, was a significant standout. He made headlines during the game, putting pressure on Alabama’s defense.

“They don’t have Nick Saban to save them,” Castellanos commented, noting his confidence on the field. He accumulated 152 passing yards and helped his team perform better than expected, while Alabama seemed to struggle.

After his first year as head coach, Karen DeBoer faced a tough start to his second season. This loss marked the first time Alabama has lost its opener since 2001, a statistic that isn’t easy to swallow for supporters.

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith also weighed in on the unfolding narrative. He reflected on the relevance of Nick Saban’s era, suggesting that it felt like a long time ago. “I’m really sorry, but this just highlights a gap since Saban’s time,” he noted on social media, critiquing Alabama’s performance down the stretch.

Junior quarterback Ty Simpson managed to throw for 254 yards and two touchdowns, but Alabama’s rushing game was underwhelming, totaling only 74 yards on 29 carries.

In the end, the unranked Seminoles celebrated their unexpected victory as Alabama fans were left searching for answers while the atmosphere at Doak S. Campbell Stadium buzzed with excitement.
