University of Kentucky Cheerleader Arrested for Concealing Infant’s Death

Authorities have arrested Laken Snelling, a 21-year-old cheerleader from the University of Kentucky, on suspicion of hiding the body of her deceased infant in a closet. Reports indicate Snelling allegedly wrapped the baby in a towel, placed the body in a garbage bag, and concealed it to obscure the child’s birth.

According to a statement from Lexington City officials, Snelling posted a $100,000 bond and is currently under house arrest, although she is not required to wear an ankle monitor.

Officers responded to a call about an unresponsive infant around 10:30 AM on August 27. Upon arrival, they found the child, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The Fayette County Coroner’s Office is investigating the cause of death.

Investigators have identified Snelling as the mother of the deceased infant. During questioning, she reportedly acknowledged giving birth. The arrest citation noted that cleaning supplies had been disposed of in black garbage bags, along with items related to the baby’s body.

Following her arrest on Sunday, Snelling was booked into the Fayette County Detention Center, facing charges including abuse of a corpse, tampering with evidence, and concealing the birth of an infant.

Updates from court documents revealed that Snelling has pleaded not guilty and is set to appear in court on September 26. As of now, she is reportedly living with her parents.

The Lexington Police Department’s Special Victims Section is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the infant’s death. Snelling has been a member of the university’s competitive cheer stunt team for the past three seasons, and it remains unclear if she has obtained legal representation.

Authorities are encouraging anyone with relevant information to contact the Lexington Police Department or submit anonymous tips to Bluegrass Crime Stoppers.
