Alabama man taken into custody for reportedly threatening a California monastery with a weapon

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office apprehended a man from Alabama, who arrived at a California Catholic monastery armed with various weapons, including brass knuckles, knives, and body armor, after allegedly making threats.

Authorities reported that Joshua Michael Richardson was taken into custody following a threatening email he sent to St. Michael’s Abbey, which contained intimidating language on August 28. Two days later, he showed up at the monastery, prompting the priest to alert law enforcement.

Sergeant Gerald McCann noted that Richardson drove from Alabama to Southern California, reaching the monastery on the same day. When officers searched his vehicle, they found multiple weapons and tactical gear.

Richardson was booked into Orange County Jail after being charged with several offenses, including carrying concealed weapons and making criminal threats, as confirmed by the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.

A spokesperson expressed appreciation for the swift response from local law enforcement and acknowledged the seriousness of the threat, especially in light of rising incidents against churches across the nation, including recent violence in Minneapolis.

The Sheriff’s Department has intensified patrols around the monastery, which is located on a 320-acre property. The monastery has also upgraded its security measures.

Officials emphasized the importance of community awareness, encouraging residents to report any suspicious behavior or communications, as collective vigilance can help prevent potential threats.

As the investigation continues, anyone with information is urged to reach out to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
