Expansion of Joint Task Force Alpha to Combat Human Trafficking

Attorney General Pam Bondi recently announced an expansion of the Joint Task Force Alpha (JTFA), which aims to disrupt multinational criminal organizations involved in human trafficking and smuggling.

During a press conference in Tampa, Florida, Bondi stressed the grave impact of human smuggling, stating that this “deadly network is killing people.” She described JTFA as a vital tool in the fight against organized smuggling networks, particularly those led by cartels and “coyotes” who exploit immigrants attempting to enter the United States.

“We are investigating and prosecuting their crimes more aggressively than ever before,” Bondi asserted, referring to the JTFA as “the tip of the spear” in these efforts.

She emphasized the significant human cost of smuggling operations, mentioning that families are being torn apart. Bondi provided a chilling detail about one smuggling ring that instructed clients on how to smuggle children who were traveling alone. “They charged up to $40,000 per victim,” she explained, revealing that over a span of this operation, they funneled around $7 million, while total profits were likely over $18 million.

Since President Trump took office, the JTFA has indicted 56 individuals connected to smuggling conspiracies, highlighting a particularly concerning case involving what was termed a “monster.” This term refers to figures within the smuggling network who exhibit extreme brutality.

In addition, officials from Texas shared horrific stories illustrating the abuse used in smuggling. U.S. Attorney Justin R. Simmons mentioned that traffickers had given young children drug-laced gummies to keep them compliant, comparing the cartels’ perspective on children to that of cocaine.

Bondi’s comments pointed out that the JTFA, initially launched in June 2021 under then Attorney General Merrick Garland, was designed to target rampant human trafficking networks operating from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. Since its inception, the task force’s reach has expanded to include operations in Colombia and Panama, as well as along the northern and maritime borders of the U.S.

To date, the JTFA has resulted in over 300 arrests, more than 240 convictions, and over 170 sentences, along with the seizure of millions in illegal assets, vehicles, and weaponry from these criminal organizations.
