Major Immigration Arrests at Hyundai Factory in Georgia

Nearly 500 individuals were apprehended by immigration officials at the Hyundai factory in Erabel, Georgia. This operation, described as the largest single-site enforcement action in U.S. homeland security history, follows former President Joe Biden’s commitment to create jobs that enable families to thrive.

Law enforcement detained 475 undocumented immigrants, primarily from Korea. The arrests were made after agents executed a judicial search warrant linked to suspicions of “illicit labor practices,” according to Steven Schrank, a special agent with Georgia’s Homeland Security Investigation. Schrank emphasized the significance of this operation in terms of protecting jobs and maintaining a fair playing field for businesses that comply with regulations.

Some arrested individuals had illegally crossed borders, while others either overstayed their visas or entered under visa waiver programs. Biden had previously announced the establishment of the factory during a visit to South Korea on October 25, 2022, where he praised Hyundai’s $5 billion investment aimed at creating 8,000 jobs in the electric vehicle battery sector.

“Hyundai’s commitment is not just about job creation. It’s about helping families and relieving costs for Americans,” Biden remarked at the time.

Georgia’s Republican Governor, Brian Kemp, mentioned in December 2022 that the new Hyundai facility would bring “employment and opportunity” throughout the state. However, Kemp’s office has not commented on the latest arrests.

The majority of those apprehended will be held at the Folkestone Detention Facility for the time being, and their situation will be assessed later, according to Schrank. After their arrest, the individuals were handed over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

No criminal charges have been disclosed as of Friday, with Schrank noting that the investigation had been ongoing for several months, gathering evidence and conducting interviews relevant to the case. Several agencies, including ICE, the Department of Homeland Security, the FBI, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, were involved in the operation.

Hyundai has stated that none of the apprehended individuals were directly employed by the company. Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump recently met with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, where discussions involved mutual interest in strengthening ties between the two countries.
