Trump’s Crime Crackdown Yields Nearly 2,000 Arrests in D.C.
Since August 7, there have been 1,914 arrests tied to President Donald Trump’s efforts to tackle crime in Washington, D.C. On Thursday night, multiple individuals, including some linked to terrorist watch lists, were apprehended—many of whom were illegal immigrants. In a notable incident, firearms were found abandoned on school grounds, which raised concerns.
A massive deployment involving hundreds of National Guard members, local police, and various federal agencies, such as the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, has been underway in the city. This initiative is part of a broader strategy initiated by Trump aimed at significantly reducing crime.
On Thursday alone, law enforcement arrested 73 individuals. Notable among them were illegal immigrants from El Salvador and Colombia, including members of the Florencia 13 gang, who had accumulated histories involving drug offenses. Among those taken into custody were individuals wanted for serious charges, including attempted murder and armed assault. Additionally, Bolivian immigrants faced charges for domestic violence and other felonies.
DC Declared a “Crime-Free Zone”
Another suspect arrested on Thursday was implicated in a case involving a gun left at a school. This individual cooperated with law enforcement and surrendered voluntarily, as reported by the White House.
Amidst the chaotic atmosphere, a child who had been missing during a surgery was located, part of a wider operation where six missing children have been found since the crackdown began. “Thanks to President Trump, many violent offenders have been taken off the streets of Washington,” commented a White House spokesperson. They emphasized that this initiative has restored a sense of order, suggesting that criminals were previously able to act without consequence.
The spokesperson also noted that the operation has led to the removal of nearly 2,000 dangerous criminals, illegal drugs, and firearms from D.C., bringing some level of peace to residents and visitors alike.
In total, the crackdown has resulted in the arrest of 17 gang members from notorious gangs like MS-13, and a notable recovery of 198 firearms. This effort has also cleared several homeless encampments in the city.
In response to a rising crime wave seen in 2020, Trump moved to federalize the metropolitan police in D.C. on August 11, allowing for a state of emergency aimed at tackling the crime surge that plagued the city, which included high-profile killings.
The National Guard’s presence in D.C. was recently extended until November 30, as outlined in a memo by Secretary of Army Dan Driscoll, designed to continue supporting the President’s efforts to maintain law and order.
Response to National Guard Deployment
Despite the high number of arrests and operations to counteract crime, some local leaders have expressed strong opposition to Trump’s strategies, arguing that they are not only excessive but potentially unconstitutional. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker criticized Trump’s deployment of the National Guard as an overreach, contending that it contradicts the foundational ideals of American governance.
Critics argue that the crime trends have already begun to decline prior to these actions, suggesting that the moves seem more politically motivated than necessary. “What Trump is doing is unprecedented and unjust,” Pritzker added, emphasizing concerns over the implications of such actions on democratic principles.
