Israel has advised Palestinians to evacuate certain areas of Gaza City as military operations intensified in the region.
Colonel Avichey Adraee, a spokesperson for the Israeli Defense Force (IDF), issued a warning specifically targeting regions that are marked for strikes. The communication included a map designating one building, with Adraee stating that an attack is planned due to the presence of Hamas’ infrastructure nearby. He urged residents to evacuate south toward the humanitarian area of Almawasi in Khan Yunis for safety.
This alert comes amid an expansion of IDF ground operations in Gaza City, part of what is referred to as Gideon’s Operation Chariots II.
Before the escalation in northern Gaza, Israel identified Khan Yunis as a humanitarian zone. This area is crucial, containing facilities like outdoor hospitals, water pipelines, and desalination plants, along with a steady supply of food, tents, medications, and medical equipment.
On Thursday, the Israeli agency Cogat indicated that they had transported thousands of tents and shelter materials to South Gaza in anticipation of evacuees from the north. Cogat is working with international partners to ensure that humanitarian resources are available.
Earlier last month, following Israel’s announcement to extend military actions into Gaza City, there was considerable backlash. The international community expressed discontent with Israel’s handling of the ongoing conflict, particularly since it intensified in October 2023. Criticism from various quarters has only grown as Israel’s plans in Gaza continue to develop.
Kiel Starmer, a prominent figure, commented in August that the Israeli government’s choice to escalate attacks is misguided. He called for reconsideration of this approach, arguing that it doesn’t contribute to resolving the ongoing conflict or securing the release of hostages, but rather leads to more violence.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also criticized the announcement, stating that this escalation fails to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza or the suffering of both Palestinians and Israeli hostages.
Moreover, France, intending to recognize a Palestinian state at the United Nations, has joined in opposing Israel’s military expansion in Gaza. A statement backed by countries like Slovenia, Denmark, Greece, and the UK condemned Israel’s plans, asserting that they violate international law and calling for a reversal of the decision.
