Transgender Athlete Ab Hernandez Stands Strong Amid Controversy
Ab Hernandez, a student athlete at a California transgender high school, competes on both the girls’ volleyball and track teams, drawing attention for her participation in women’s sports. Despite facing criticism, Hernandez remains steadfast and unapologetic.
This season, some teams opposing Jurupa Valley have opted not to play against them, largely due to having a biological male on the roster. Chaffey High School, however, decided to face Jurupa Valley and ended up losing the match in four sets.
Hernandez is determined not to let the negative feedback undermine her experience. In a recent interview, she remarked, “They swear I’m like this crazy danger to society. I’m just a normal kid and I play sports.” Her involvement in women’s sports has sparked debates about fairness, particularly during the California High School state championships in spring, where she claimed several victories. The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) has updated its regulations to allow girls to compete alongside Hernandez.
Continuing the discussion, Hernandez voiced her frustration over people’s perceptions. “I think people are just looking at one thing and they’re like, ‘Oh, that’s you’. They don’t take the time to get to know me,” she said, reflecting on the challenges of being misunderstood.
The previous evening, just before the match against Chaffey, Hernandez received an enthusiastic welcome from supporters, some of whom wore shirts advocating for transgender rights. However, she expressed disappointment over the choices of other teams to forfeit matches rather than play against Jurupa Valley.
In terms of team dynamics, Hernandez emphasizes the importance of collective effort. “Team sports, I can’t take that. It’s a team effort. My team needs to be willing to fight with me, and that’s what it takes to win the team title.”
As the controversy surrounding gender participation policies continues, Hernandez’s story serves as a focal point in the ongoing discussion about inclusivity in athletics.
