House Prepares for Defense Policy Bill Vote
The House is gearing up to approve the annual Defense Policy Bill this week, with Democrats bringing forth numerous amendments.
Lawmakers have put forward around 450 amendments to the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). These amendments address various issues, including diversity initiatives, funding for Israel, and critiques of former President Trump’s policies on illegal immigration.
This coming Monday, the House Rules Committee will assess the bill, establish guidelines for debate, and prepare for a vote on the floor later this week.
While many progressive proposals may not succeed, they do serve a symbolic purpose. Interestingly, Democrats are leveraging these bipartisan defense bills to challenge the White House and Republican leaders.

Representative Jasmine Crockett from Texas has introduced a series of amendments, one aiming to lift the NDAA’s restrictions on using Defense Funds for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts.
Other amendments from California’s Luz Rivas and Hawaii’s Jill Tokuda also strive to remove the ban on DEI programs at the Pentagon.
Crockett has also suggested halting the construction of immigration detention facilities on military bases, directly opposing policies from the Trump administration.
Rep. Maxwell Frost from Florida has proposed an amendment to prohibit Department of Defense funds from facilitating the detention and removal of immigrants.
Last month, it was announced that the Pentagon plans to construct the largest federal immigration detention center at Fort Bliss, Texas.
Representative Delia Ramirez from Illinois has proposed two amendments targeting immigration policies from the Trump era. According to the Rules Commission’s website, one would stop funding aimed at family separations, while another could block deportations to countries like El Salvador.
Meanwhile, Tlaib’s amendment seeks to restrict the sale of U.S. arms to countries whose officials have outstanding International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrants. Notably, warrants have been issued against Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and other high-ranking officials.
Similarly, Omar’s proposal aims to eliminate Israel’s emergency access to U.S.-controlled arms stored within the country.
The NDAA is a crucial bill, passed annually to outline the U.S. government’s defense and national security policies. This year, the legislation has seen more than 1,000 amendments put forward.
