Arkansas Governor Plans Deployment of National Guard for Immigration Enforcement
Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, a prominent figure from President Donald Trump’s first term, announced plans on Tuesday to deploy a group of national guards to aid in the deportation of illegal immigrants.
The Republican, who previously served as the White House press secretary, is set to collaborate with the Department of Homeland Security. This federal power allows security personnel to remain under her command while receiving funding from the federal government.
“We can’t have violent, criminal illegal immigrants in Arkansas,” said Sanders.
She added, “I’ve enacted a defense against criminal misconduct to ensure these offenders face consequences for their actions, especially illegal immigrants committing further crimes in our state. I anticipate the national guard will work with the Trump administration to uphold federal immigration laws.”
Iowa Governor Mentions National Guard Support for Immigration Control
In her remarks, Sanders praised her former boss for effectively managing border security and criticized local Democratic leaders for their failure to maintain order in major cities.
“Arkansas stands behind him at every step,” she emphasized.
Brigadier General Chad Bridge of the Arkansas National Guard confirmed that his troops are prepared to assist the DHS, underlining his focus on their primary duties.
A total of 40 guards from Fort Smith, Little Rock, and Fayetteville will be activated for this task.
Support for State Troopers in Immigration Crackdown
Sanders has also outlined plans for logistical support in the transport of illegal immigrant detainees, clarifying that the guards will remain unarmed during these operations.
The Arkansas National Guard’s involvement will help the DHS streamline the detention and deportation processes, allowing federal agents to prioritize capturing illegal immigrant offenders.
Recently, Sanders signed legislation aimed at strengthening penalties for illegal immigrants involved in criminal activities, and she has broadened the state’s ban on sanctuary cities to cover rural areas as well.
Violent Incidents Involving Illegal Immigrants
Sanders’ office highlighted some serious incidents involving violent illegal immigrants apprehended in Arkansas. For instance, in January, the Arkansas State Police arrested Lewis Daniel Bardes Rays, who allegedly attacked state troopers, and Elias Avila Bastilo, who was wanted in El Salvador for gang-related activities.
Additionally, a tragic DUI crash claimed the life of nurse Jennifer Anne Morton, which was caused by illegal immigrant Yair Sorto-Herera Maynor.
Throughout the Biden administration, Sanders made a point to visit the Mexican border, frequently criticizing the Democratic leadership’s approach to immigration issues.
