LeBron James receives backlash from former NFL reporter regarding his China essay

Former NFL sideline reporter Michele Tafoya criticized LeBron James after the Los Angeles Lakers published an enthusiastic essay about China in a state-controlled publication on Monday.

During her appearance on Outkick’s “With Dan Dakich,” Tafoya shared her thoughts on James’ column, admitting that she wasn’t sure if it was real initially.

She questioned, “Is this genuine? Is it AI? Is this even legal? This is a guy who defends China—why? Maybe it’s because all his sneakers are manufactured there.”

Tafoya pointed out James’ silence on issues like the treatment of Uyghur Muslims in China. In a 2024 report, the U.S. Department of Labor indicated that Uyghurs faced forced indoctrination and coercive language training.

China consistently rejects accusations of human rights violations against Uyghurs.

She added, “He seems oblivious to the human rights issues in China. There are just horrific events happening there, and it seems almost like he endorses the idea. Perhaps he’s okay with it? It’s surprising for someone so vocal about the history of slavery in the United States.”

Tafoya expressed her confusion about how James can overlook such critical issues. “I have so many pressing questions; I’d love to interview him, but I doubt he’d address these topics,” she remarked.

James’ essay came at the conclusion of his “Eternal King Tour,” which included stops in Shanghai and Chengdu. He wrote, “The warmth and kindness I receive from my Chinese friends deeply touch me. All I can do is give my all in every game and show my appreciation.” He also expressed hopes to contribute to basketball’s growth in China.

James mentioned feeling grateful for the acceptance he receives from Chinese fans. “Every time I visit, my family and I are treated so warmly. It’s really touching how hospitable my Chinese friends are,” he wrote, emphasizing his commitment to give his best in all matches.
