NFL Legend Writes to Pope Leo XIV

When Robert F. Prevast was appointed Pope in May, it sparked a competitive atmosphere within the sports realm as leaders sought to stake their claims. Ultimately, the baseball community, particularly fans of the Chicago White Sox, celebrated the Pope’s influence, rather than the Cubs.

This homage to the Pope was notably highlighted at the White Sox’s ballpark where a video mass featuring Leo XIV was broadcast in June.

The buzz generated by this event led some retired athletes to speculate about the Pope being a fan of football as well.

“It’s you. It’s Tiger Woods. It’s Bradley Cooper. It’s President Bush,” noted Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning, who mentioned that on Monday, he sent handwritten letters to both Pope Leo XIV and his executive assistant.

“Check out these letters,” Manning said to his brother Eli during a segment on ESPN 2, holding up the notes. “I really put in the effort,” he added with a hint of humor, detailing his approach.

Manning later noted, “These are handwritten letters, and I’m inviting you to join us publicly.”

The former University of Tennessee standout jokingly extended an invitation for the Pope to appear on his ESPN 2 show, emphasizing the fun of sharing football memories and analyzing Monday Night Football alongside celebrity guests.

“You can come on the show anytime,” Manning reiterated.

He also shared that the Pope’s name has frequently surfaced among their top desired guests. “It’s you, Tiger Woods, Bradley Cooper, President Bush, and even Larry David,” he listed off with excitement.

“We genuinely want to welcome you, your holiness,” Manning concluded, expressing sincerity.

Despite his earnest attempts, Manning reflected that he hadn’t succeeded in securing the Pope’s appearance. “I wasn’t able to get the Pope on the show, but I gave it my all,” he humorously recounted to his brother.

The episode featured other notable personalities, including iconic comedians like Bill Murray, along with notable football figures such as Randy Moss and current Philadelphia Eagles star Saquon Barkley.

So, while “Manning Cast” may not yet be worthy of the Pope, it certainly promises an intriguing lineup for viewers.
