'Lenient Crime Policies' Resulted in Death of Ukrainian Woman; We Aim for 'Maximum Punishment' for 'Unforgivable Offense'

Attorney General Pam Bondi has referred Decarlos Brown Jr., a 34-year-old repeat offender with an extensive criminal record, for federal prosecution in connection with the murder of 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska.

Bondi remarked on an X post, stating, “Iryna Zarutska was a young woman pursuing her American dreams. Her tragic murder is a direct consequence of ineffective crime policies that prioritize criminals over innocent lives.”

She continued, expressing her commitment to overseeing the federal prosecution of Brown, a violent repeat offender. “I am advocating for the harshest penalties for this unforgivable act,” she added.

FBI Director Kash Patel described the incident as “an dishonorable act that should not occur in America.” He added that the FBI acted swiftly to ensure justice and made it clear that violent offenders would not go unpunished.

Patel also noted, “President Trump is dedicated to restoring safety in American cities. We appreciate Pam Bondi’s efforts in creating a federal case to hold this individual accountable.”

This update follows two and a half weeks after the fatal stabbing of Iryna Zarutska, a Ukrainian refugee. The suspect, Brown, has been arrested and charged with murder despite his lengthy felony history.

Many lawmakers are highlighting how Brown, despite his past, was allowed to walk free. For instance, Rep. Randy Fine (R-FL) announced plans to introduce legislation holding judges responsible for releasing violent repeat offenders.

Fine said, “It’s easy to let criminals go when you have armed enforcement protecting you. The rest of us aren’t so fortunate.” He also stated, “All the judges who released DeCarlos Brown Jr. should face a day in court themselves.”

Transport Secretary Sean Duffy indicated that the Department of Transportation is launching an investigation into the stabbing incidents that occurred on trains, suggesting that if the mayor can’t ensure the safety of public transport, it shouldn’t receive taxpayer funds.

In response to the tragedy, President Trump expressed his sorrow, saying, “I just send love and hope to the family of the young woman who was stabbed… and even hope for the perpetrator.” He added, “It’s alarming that you can’t really see the threat, but it stings deeply. She was just sitting there. We need to take action; if we don’t, there will be no country.”
