Conor McGregor Pursues Presidential Bid in Ireland with Musk’s Support

Conor McGregor seems to be making a serious push to run for a political position in Ireland, and notably, Elon Musk appears to be backing him.

Back in March, McGregor stated his intention to pursue a role in government and, just last month, he encouraged people to sign a petition to ensure their votes would count.

However, there’s some political maneuvering happening. Ireland’s Prime Minister, Simon Harris, has instructed a local councillor to make sure that independent candidates like McGregor can be nominated.

Musk made his feelings known on X, expressing displeasure over the situation. He remarked, “Simon Harris’ disgrace for blocking the will of the Irish people!” Following that, he seemed to fully endorse McGregor, stating, “Conor McGregor, the President will save Ireland.”

Earlier this week, McGregor and Musk connected via FaceTime. McGregor had previously uploaded a petition online, pointing out that the current requirements for candidates are rather restrictive. To qualify for nomination, potential candidates must secure support from either 20 members of Oireachtas or one of four local councils.

“While the system aims to uphold some political balance among candidates, it inadvertently stifles genuine representation for Irish voters,” McGregor commented.

He argues that there should be a push for change in the nomination process, allowing Irish citizens at home and abroad to have a say in determining who appears on the presidential ballot. “This isn’t just about me,” he added, “it’s about empowering people to shape their future.” He also critiqued the Irish government while speaking at the White House, raising awareness about issues that affect the Irish community.

Last September, McGregor hinted at a possible presidential run, confidently branding himself as “the only logical choice.” He made the official announcement after a visit with former President Donald Trump.

It’s worth noting that McGregor has been out of the ring since 2021, when he suffered a leg injury. Though he had hoped to make a comeback last year, he encountered a toe injury that sidelined him. He has mentioned wanting to return for UFC events scheduled at the White House next year.
