LeBron James Faces Criticism Over Chinese Newspaper Article

This week, LeBron James kept a low profile amid controversy surrounding an article that featured his name in China’s state-run newspaper. The piece, which appeared on Monday in The People’s Daily, expressed gratitude towards China and its people, marking the first time an NBA player has contributed to state-controlled media. This comes nearly six years after James criticized former Houston Rockets executive Daryl Morey for supporting protesters in Hong Kong against the Chinese government.

On Tuesday, new reports added complexity to the situation, but clarity remained elusive as James was met with significant backlash over the perceived implications of his involvement.

An unnamed source reportedly told The Athletic that while James’s name was associated with the article, he had not personally authored it in a conventional sense. The source stated that he had given group interviews during visits to two Chinese cities for his “Eternal King Tour” with Nike. The source reiterated that although the words attributed to him in the article were accurate, they were not presented as his personal essays or opinion pieces.

Three translators clarified that while The People’s Daily listed James as the “author,” the article was edited by reporters who had conducted interviews with him.

Despite the situation, James has not publicly addressed why his name appeared in the Communist Party’s publication, and there is uncertainty surrounding whether he was aware of this development. Fox News Digital reached out to his representatives to inquire about any potential confusion surrounding his authorship, but received no response.

The issue has ignited vocal criticism, with former NFL sideline reporter Michele Tafoya initiating a public backlash. She expressed disbelief at James’s actions, questioning legality and suggesting that he protects Chinese interests due to his business ties, particularly since his sneakers are produced there. Tafoya highlighted that while James has been outspoken on issues of human rights, he has been notably quiet regarding the treatment of Uyghur Muslims in China, which has led to speculation about his priorities.

Adding to the criticism, sports commentator Tim Brand referred to James as having “sold out,” emphasizing a growing disinterest in the NBA since its association with China. Brand’s sentiments reflect a significant shift among fans who, disenchanted by the league’s approach, are increasingly disengaged.

However, in his article, James expressed heartfelt gratitude towards his Chinese fans, highlighting the warmth he felt during his visits. He emphasized his commitment to contribute positively to basketball’s growth in China.

In another segment of the article, he mentioned, “Every time I come here, my family and I are warmly welcomed. I am deeply moved by the hospitality and friendliness of my Chinese friends. All I can do is give everything in every match and express my gratitude to everyone.”
