NATO Engages After Russian Drone Incursion into Polish Airspace
In a significant development in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, NATO officials reported on Wednesday that a Russian drone had crossed into Polish airspace, prompting an engagement from NATO forces. Mark Latte, NATO’s executive director, confirmed the incident, marking the first time allied forces have fired on Russian troops since the war began.
The drone incursion occurred during a Russian attack on Ukraine, and it was spotted late Tuesday. It involved a Polish F-16 jet, a Dutch F-35, Italian surveillance aircraft, and a NATO refueling plane. “Several allies participated alongside Poland,” Latte stated, expressing his praise for the pilots and their prompt, skilled response.
This situation has drawn international attention, leading to widespread condemnation and concerns about the potential for escalation within the conflict. There are fears this could result in greater involvement from NATO countries in Europe. Latte noted the need for reassurances from NATO allies during discussions held that morning regarding Poland’s circumstances under Article IV of the Washington Treaty.
“Last night, a considerable number of Russian drones breached Polish airspace. Our air defense was activated, effectively safeguarding NATO territory,” Latte remarked. Allies showed solidarity with Poland and condemned what they described as reckless behavior by Russia.
When asked if NATO considered the drone’s incursion a deliberate act, Latte mentioned that investigations are still underway. “A complete assessment is ongoing. Regardless of intent, it’s undeniably reckless and dangerous,” he added.
As of now, the Russian Foreign Ministry has not publicly commented on the incident.
