Sen. Lindsey Graham Urges Sanctions Against Russia Following Drone Incident
On Wednesday, Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) called for sanctions against Russia after a drone reportedly violated Polish airspace.
This plea follows President Trump’s remarks on Truth Social, where he expressed concern about the incursion, questioning what actions would be taken. “What about Russia violating Polish airspace with drones? We’re going here!” he noted.
In response, Graham stated, “Mr. President, Congress stands with you.” He shared a screenshot of the president’s reaction about the incident, adding that they were ready to pass legislation to implement new sanctions and tariffs at the president’s discretion. “Our aim is to support you as you tackle this escalating threat,” he further expressed.
Earlier on the same day, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that Polish forces had downed multiple Russian drones which had crossed into their airspace, coinciding with an attack on Ukraine.
Senators Graham and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) introduced legislation in April proposing a hefty 500% tariff on any country importing Russian oil, gas, uranium, and similar products. Notably, this bill has garnered support from 81 co-sponsors in the Senate.
“Putin’s reckless actions against NATO allies demand more than mere condemnation,” Blumenthal emphasized. He criticized previous diplomatic efforts, suggesting they have emboldened Putin. Blumenthal, along with Connecticut Democrats, urged Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) to expedite the proposed legislation.
Additionally, Republican Senator Tom Tillis (N.C.) and Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen (N.H.), co-chairs of the NATO Observer Group, issued a joint statement advocating for sanctions on Russia and military support for Ukraine and eastern NATO allies.
This situation escalated following an attack on Kyiv’s government buildings over the weekend, resulting in over 20 civilian casualties in the Donbas region.
