Tragic Death of 17-Year-Old Following Gang-Related Shooting
A 17-year-old girl has died two weeks after being shot in the face during a gang-related incident at a basketball tournament in the Bronx. Anthonaya Campbell passed away on Monday, becoming the second victim of this tragic event that unfolded on August 23, which also left three others injured and claimed the life of a 32-year-old man.
While watching the summer basketball games at Haffen Park, Campbell was wounded in the face. According to the NYPD, she ultimately succumbed to her injuries at Jacobi Hospital. A post on Facebook by Hartfelt noted that she had been fighting for her life since the incident.
“This is a devastating moment! This young girl’s life mattered, and she should still be with us!” a friend expressed online, lamenting the ongoing violence. They stressed the need for an end to these senseless acts, not just in the Bronx but globally.
Campbell’s mother mentioned that she was visiting friends when her daughter was injured, sharing, “She’s a fun person… When you see her, you just smile. She loves everyone.” It’s a poignant reminder of the impact this loss has on those who knew her.
The NYPD is treating Campbell’s death as a murder. The first victim, Jaysil Banks, 32, was declared dead upon arrival at Jacobi Hospital shortly after the shooting. In total, three adults were hurt during the gunfire that erupted amidst the tournament.
Authorities recovered numerous bullet casings from the scene, indicating the violence of the event. Four people, including two minors, have since been arrested and face severe charges related to the shootings.
Daeven Reyes, 20, Robert Royal, 25, along with a 17-year-old and a 16-year-old, are facing charges of murder and attempted murder, gang assault, and weapon possession. Following Campbell’s passing, the charges related to one count of attempted murder are expected to evolve into a murder charge.
In the midst of this, the violence in the Bronx rages on. Just last week, a drive-by shooting led to one man’s death and four others being hurt, with sources indicating that it too was gang-related.
