"View Him as a Human Being": Caller on Well-Known Hip-Hop Show Criticizes Online Response to Charlie Kirk's Assassination

Controversial Reactions to Charlie Kirk’s Assassination

On Friday’s “The Breakfast Club,” a caller criticized the harsh responses seen online following the assassination of Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA (TPUSA).

Kirk was killed on Wednesday after addressing a large group of students at Utah Valley University (UVU). During the show’s “Today’s Donkey” segment, the caller expressed that Kirk deserved “sympathy” and referred to the assassination as contradictory to American values.

“Everyone should think of him [Kirk] as a person at the end of the day,” the caller stated, pointing out the harshness of some social media reactions. “He was assassinated in front of hundreds of people. I think it’s okay to be concerned about what happened.”

Host Charlamagne echoed the caller’s sentiments, reflecting on the personal impact of such a loss. “What happens when you have someone you love who is seen as controversial?” he asked. “These days, everyone seems to have a voice.”

Charlamagne admitted that his immediate reaction to Kirk’s assassination was one of fear, worrying about the potential for similar violence against himself.

“This should be America—a land of freedom. You should be able to express your thoughts,” the caller remarked. “Opinions are one thing, but resorting to violence for someone’s viewpoint is crossing a line.”

Despite leaving behind a wife and two young children, Kirk was the subject of harsh criticism. On Thursday’s “The Don Lemon Show,” comedian Hughley called Kirk a “horrible person,” pointing to inflammatory remarks he made.

Moreover, MSNBC political analyst Matthew Dowd suggested that Kirk’s divisive rhetoric contributed to the shooting. He described Kirk as a leading figure in promoting hate speech aimed at specific groups.

Following Dowd’s controversial comments, MSNBC issued a statement on Wednesday acknowledging the inappropriateness of his remarks, leading to his termination. Dowd later apologized as well.
