White House Celebrates End of DEI Requirements in Medical Education

The White House is expressing satisfaction with the recent decision by a prominent accreditor in medical education to discontinue its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) mandates.

White House Press Officer Liz Houston remarked, “President Trump is safeguarding civil rights and reinstating merit-based opportunities. Organizations such as the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education are wisely opting to halt expenditures on the divisive DEI initiatives.” Houston emphasized that “individual dignity, hard work, and excellence are the underpinnings of American greatness, and we will not support these questionable demands for ‘justice’ within our institutions.”

Georgia University Revises DEI Strategy Following Trump’s Mandate

Last week, the Graduate Medical Education Accreditation Council (ACGME) announced its decision to terminate DEI requirements. This move comes in the wake of federal directives that discourage accrediting bodies from prioritizing DEI efforts.

The ACGME stated, “Recent federal guidelines, including executive orders and proposed regulations from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, prevent accredited organizations from mandating or promoting a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion.” Furthermore, similar restrictions apply to programs and hospitals that receive Graduate Medical Education Medicare funding.

ACGME, which is an independent nonprofit responsible for establishing medical education standards, indicated its compliance with President Trump’s orders to cease DEI initiatives.

Addressing Concerns Amid Policy Changes

In its statement, ACGME affirmed it will support stakeholders through this transition by eliminating DEI-specific accreditation requirements and updating relevant policies. They reassured that the accreditation system will maintain the highest standards for medical education and serve a diverse patient population while aligning with the current regulatory environment.
