State Department Faces Lawsuits Amid Ryan Routh Trial
The State Department is currently dealing with lawsuits filed on Monday, which involve the acquisition of records tied to communications with Ryan Routh, who is on trial for allegedly attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump.
Routh traveled to Ukraine following the Russian invasion in 2022, where he worked with the International Volunteer Centre aimed at recruiting foreign soldiers for military efforts. The Center for Advancement of Security in America (CASA) initiated lawsuits on January 1, 2023, and September 14, 2024, seeking potential communications between Routh and officials in the State Department.
“Given Routh’s role in Ukraine, which connects foreigners to military units, it’s crucial for Americans to understand the nature of communications between Routh and officials at the Biden administration,” stated CASA Director James Fitzpatrick.
Over 355 days have passed since CASA filed its initial request for records, yet no response has been provided, according to the ongoing lawsuit.
Additionally, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has monitored Americans traveling to Ukraine to participate in the conflict; however, reports indicate that Routh was not among those being investigated, as noted by Politico in September 2024.
The State Department has not offered any comments regarding this situation.
A nurse who encountered Routh in Ukraine expressed her worries during a lengthy interview with customs and border officials in 2022. Sarah Adams, a former CIA officer, told the Wall Street Journal that Routh is labeled among Ukrainian volunteer aid groups as a “con artist” and somewhat of a troublemaker.
Routh faces five counts related to an attempted murder of Trump on September 15, 2024, which followed a previous incident during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where Routh nearly grazed Trump’s ear. He is representing himself in his trial that began recently in Florida.
Judge Eileen Cannon interrupted Routh’s opening statement, and his cross-examinations of witnesses have been notably brief. When questioning the first prosecution witness, a Secret Service agent who found Routh hiding in the bushes with a firearm, Routh inquired about the significance of being “alive.”
“The Biden State Department has been heavily involved in tracking Americans who went to Ukraine to aid war efforts,” asserted Fitzpatrick. “This also extends to Routh, and our litigation will compel the release of those records to the public.”
