State Terrorism Charges Against Luigi Mangioni Dismissed Due to Lack of Evidence

On Tuesday morning, a series of terrorist attacks in the state shifted the focus of charges against Luigi Mangion, who is implicated in the cold-blooded assassination of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Yet, a judge upheld a second-degree murder charge against the Ivy League graduate.

According to reports, Mangione’s legal team maintained that the federal death penalty charges, along with the case in New York City, posed even greater risks.

Despite this, Judge Gregory Caro declined to elaborate on their argument, stating it was premature to reach such conclusions.

The judge decided to dismiss the terrorism related accusations, emphasizing that the crime of second-degree murder legally does not meet the threshold for being classified as terrorism or first-degree murder.

Mangion appeared at Manhattan Crown Court wearing a tan prison jumpsuit before 9:30 AM for hearings on various pre-trial motions. The courtroom was filled with numerous media representatives, including CBS News.

In the judge’s written statement, it was noted that while murder itself is undeniably a serious crime, New York law does not automatically classify a crime as terrorism just because it is ideologically driven. Caro remarked:

The defendant had clearly expressed hostility towards UHC, but overall, his objectives did not seem to include “blackmailing and coercing civilians.” Indeed, no evidence supporting such a motive has been brought forth.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for December 1st, with Mangione expected to appear in federal court shortly beforehand, as reported by the Associated Press.

Mangion entered a not guilty plea to multiple murder charges on December 4, 2024.

Surveillance footage captured a masked individual fatally shooting Thompson from behind as he arrived for an investor meeting at Hilton Midtown in New York.

Authorities indicated that phrases like “delay,” “deny,” and “retirement” were inscribed alongside the ammunition, reflecting common tactics employed by insurance companies to sidestep claims.

Following the incident, the New York City Police Department (NYPD) classified Thompson’s murder as a distinctly targeted attack, according to further reports.

Video evidence shows the shocking moment when Thompson was shot.
