Schumer and Jeffries promise to resist the Republican government funding proposal

Schumer, Jeffries vow to oppose GOP government funding plan

Government Shutdown Looms as Democrats Oppose GOP Spending Bill

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries made a joint announcement on Tuesday, stating their intention to resist fundraising efforts for the GOP funding bill until November 21. This move heightens the risk of a government shutdown.

Following the introduction of a 91-page bill by Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, Schumer and Jeffries expressed their concerns. They pointed out that the proposed House Republican spending bill does not address the actual needs of the American people and fails to tackle the impending medical crisis.

The leaders cautioned, “By refusing to collaborate with Democrats, Republicans are pushing our nation directly toward a shutdown.”

On the other hand, Republicans are touting the bill as a “clean” solution that would sustain most funding levels until just before Thanksgiving. This bill also aligns with former President Trump’s call for $58 million in new funding to enhance security for administrative officials and the Supreme Court. Additionally, it allocates $30 million for expanded security for Congress members, who typically lack security details in their home districts.

The legislation includes provisions requested by the White House that empower the District of Columbia to use taxes and other non-federal revenue. However, it notably omits any extension of the generous health premium subsidies linked to the Affordable Care Act, which are set to expire at the end of the year. Experts warn that allowing these subsidies to lapse could significantly increase premiums for millions of Americans.

Furthermore, Schumer and Jeffries criticized the collaboration between Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune, arguing that the spending bill was crafted without substantial Democratic input. They highlighted that both had dismissed two formal requests from Democratic leaders aimed at establishing a fair framework for spending.

Schumer and Jeffries added that last week, former President Trump had directed Congressional Republicans to undermine the bipartisan spending bill, which they claim adversely affects Americans without Democratic backing.

“Instead of focusing on governance, Republicans seem to be following orders from Trump, putting the American population at risk and recklessly steering the country toward a potential shutdown,” they concluded.
