Travis Kelce causes a stir with 'Free 4' shirt in support of Rashee Rice

Chiefs Players Show Support for Rashee Rice

Travis Kelce and Ty’quan Thornton, two players from the Kansas City Chiefs, were recently spotted wearing shirts that said “Free 4” in support of their teammate Rashee Rice. This came ahead of their Super Bowl LIX rematch. Rice, currently facing serious legal troubles, entered his third NFL season with a six-game suspension after being involved in a crash that resulted in severe injuries. After pleading guilty in July, he agreed to a deferred probation deal that includes five years of probation and a 30-day jail sentence.

As Kelce and Thornton made their way to Gehafield at Arrowhead Stadium, they donned graphic tees featuring images of Rice, making their stance clear.

The gesture hasn’t gone unnoticed. Lenahan, a representative for one of the crash victims, expressed mixed feelings. He commended Kelce and Thornton for their support but mentioned that perhaps they need to reconsider their role in this situation. Citing Rice’s actions leading to the crash—like speeding and leaving the scene—he argued that Rice shouldn’t be equated with historical figures like Nelson Mandela.

Lenahan criticized Rice for not yet fulfilling a $1.1 million settlement with the victims, highlighting the gravity of the incident. Prosecutors noted that Rice was driving a Lamborghini at 119 mph, weaving through traffic before fleeing the scene on foot. In a statement released by his attorney, Rice reflected on his actions, acknowledging the pain they’ve caused others and committing to making amends.

As the Chiefs have struggled without Rice—starting the season with an 0-2 record—Patrick Mahomes has averaged 211 passing yards. Rice is set to be eligible to return for the game against the Las Vegas Raiders on October 19.
