Trump selects Scott Bessent to overhaul the IRS and eliminate Biden-era policies

Trump’s Initiative Against the IRS

In visiting Washington, there seems to be a shared purpose: advocating for a Florida family’s freedom and striving for the economic opportunities that many Americans seek. President Trump, too, has arrived here for similar reasons.

Yet the ongoing challenge is the IRS, which some view as a cumbersome institution that has become a tool against those striving to make a living under President Biden’s administration.

This situation appears to be evolving.

President Trump has wisely chosen to engage with Scott Bessent regarding the IRS. Unlike typical bureaucrats, Bessent is a businessman who understands the need for results. The focus is on protecting taxpayers and driving the IRS away from disrupting American businesses. This is a win for those who have played by the rules yet still face audits.

Trump’s Tax Reform Proposal

Bessent is already working on addressing the lingering issues from the Biden era that have turned government agencies into instruments of political agendas. That’s certainly encouraging, but it just marks the beginning.

A recent Treasury report indicated that taxpayer audits increased in 2024, suggesting the agency is on course to meet its objectives outlined in the 2022 Agency Directive.

The Biden administration needs to reconsider tax policies that negatively impact Florida families and small businesses. The aim must shift toward reducing the IRS’s size, enhancing efficiency, ensuring transparency, safeguarding personal information, and improving customer service.

The first priority should be eliminating the 2014-14 policy, which has caused significant disruption for Americans. This policy forces business owners into a corner with conflicting regulations, leading to unnecessary IRS audits. This environment doesn’t support job creation — it threatens to shutter small businesses.

Building an Economic Legacy

It’s not just theory; many Floridians, both large and small businesses alike, have expressed that Biden’s IRS has made employment, investment, and growth challenging. With President Biden allocating $70 billion for 87,000 new IRS agents, the implication is clear: they intend to extract every possible cent from American families. This approach breeds distrust among Floridians, who feel they must constantly look over their shoulders for IRS enforcement actions.

This climate of anxiety stifles potential and limits opportunities. Florida, being a state built on entrepreneurship, feels these impacts more acutely than others.

Secretary Bessent seems to comprehend these challenges. He intends to redirect the IRS back to its core responsibilities: collecting income, ensuring privacy, and providing service without political undertones or harassment.

With Trump leading the charge and Bessent managing the IRS, there’s real potential to repair this flawed institution. However, we must remain committed to this work.

This involves dismantling the revenue control policies of 2014-14 and discarding Biden’s measures that penalize job creators. It’s crucial to stop selective enforcement practices that target conservatives while letting progressives escape accountability.

These immediate steps the IRS could take would offer families, retirees, and business owners the stability they require for growth.

In Florida, what we seek isn’t handouts; it’s freedom. Freedom to labor, generate jobs, and fulfill the American dream without undue burdens.

With Trump and Bessent pushing for genuine change, it’s now up to Congress to support these reforms and make them lasting. The IRS should serve the public, not act against their interests.
