Michigan high school punishes athlete for unsettling behavior, organization states

A Michigan high school has taken significant action following troubling videos that surfaced, showing a junior varsity football player making a controversial play against a smaller opponent. This incident occurred during a game against Lakeshore High School on Thursday. The player’s mother reported that her 15-year-old son is currently dealing with two fractures in his spine as a result of the play.

The Michigan High School Athletics Association (MHSAA) stated they have been in communication with both schools since Friday and emphasized that Kalamazoo Central High School is treating the matter with the seriousness it deserves. They noted that actions taken exceed standard MHSAA regulations for safety and sportsmanship, although specific disciplinary actions cannot be disclosed due to privacy laws.

According to his mother, Courtney Mims, the injured player, identified as Colton, is undergoing recovery and is hopeful to complete the season. Mims expressed her concern, saying that as a mother, witnessing her child in pain was new and unsettling. She remarked on the intense commitment these young athletes have, noting they invest considerable time and effort into their sports.

In a gesture that touched Mims deeply, a player from Kalamazoo Central reached out to apologize, reminding her that one person’s actions don’t represent the entire team. Mims expressed appreciation for the community’s support during this challenging time.

Lakeshore School officials have indicated that they are collaborating with other schools regarding this incident. It remains unclear how both schools will proceed as they address the aftermath of the event.
