Authorities: Dallas ICE incident highlights the risks of online hatred

Dallas Ice Facility Shooting Update

On Thursday, officials from various agencies conducted a press conference focused on the ongoing investigation into a shooting incident at a Dallas ice facility. This tragic event resulted in the death of one detainee and injuries to two others. Authorities are now appealing for an end to the dangerous rhetoric circulating online.

U.S. Attorney Nancy Larson voiced her deep concern, as this marks the third threat or attack on law enforcement in Texas during her brief time in office. Just recently, there was a bomb threat tied to the facility.

Larson mentioned the “tragic irony” of the shooting, which was intended to instill real fear among the ice personnel, but instead, it was the detainees who suffered the consequences.

The suspected shooter, identified as 29-year-old Joshua Yarn, reportedly arrived at the site with a large ladder, allowing him to access the roof of a nearby building. The attack commenced at around 6:30 am, leading to the death of one detainee and injury to two others. Yarn was later found deceased, with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

During the attack, Yarn used an 8mm bolt-action rifle, which he had legally purchased. Investigations revealed that he had executed a detailed pre-attack plan.

Law enforcement authorities searched Yarn’s residence and discovered a handwritten note outlining his intentions. He seemingly held negative views towards ice agents, referring to them derogatorily and expressing animosity towards the federal government.

Officials reiterated that the attack served to highlight the dangers of hate-fueled rhetoric proliferating in both media and online platforms, which they believe contributes significantly to the rise of such violent incidents.
