High School Football Player Denounces Teammate’s Actions
A high school football player from Michigan has criticized a teammate’s “terrifying decision” that resulted in a serious injury to an opposing player. The incident has led to racially charged threats directed at both the school and its coach.
Rhys Biske, aged 15, expressed his feelings on Thursday, stating that he cannot support his fellow Kalamazoo Central High School teammate’s “illegal moves” during a game against Lakeshore on September 19.
“What my teammate did to that Lakeshore player was unacceptable,” Biske mentioned in a video shared by his mother. “It was an illegal move, and it shouldn’t have happened. It was a horrifying decision,” he added, clearly showing his disapproval.
Biske acknowledged that the act was intentional, though he insisted that there was no malicious intent behind it. He claimed that his teammate aimed to “celebrate what makes the game interesting.”
After the play, the teammate approached Biske to apologize, feeling remorseful once he realized the impact of his actions. However, by that time, the injured Lakeshore player had already been taken off the field.
Footage shared on social media captured the moment, showing the larger Kalamazoo player colliding with the smaller, 15-year-old Lakeshore player.
Immediately after the incident, the injured boy was rushed to the hospital, where physicians discovered two fractures in his spine.
Courtney Mims, the mother of the injured student, shared that her son won’t be returning for the remainder of the season, and doctors are still assessing whether he’ll be able to play again in the future.
Biske added that many spectators, coaches, and officials were unaware of the collision as it occurred during a scoring play.
He also reported that both coaches and staff from Kalamazoo Central have been receiving racial threats online.
“There are a lot of threats and comments about this incident, discussing jail time for my teammate and the firing of coaches,” he noted.
Biske’s mother, Sandra, revealed that during a recent parent meeting, school administrators addressed the “terrifying racial slander” being directed at the institution.
The Kalamazoo Township Police Department is currently investigating these threats aimed at both the school and individuals involved.
Kalamazoo Central High School stated they have taken “strong and decisive actions” against the junior varsity players responsible for the incident, although privacy laws prevent them from disclosing specific details.
The Michigan High School Athletic Association also issued a statement regarding the seriousness of the situation.
Principal Greg Eding of Lakeshore School communicated to the community that the behavior exhibited by Kalamazoo players is “unacceptable and has no place in student athletics.”
He added that the director of Kalamazoo Public Schools has apologized for the incident and has enforced significant disciplinary measures in accordance with school policies and conduct codes.
