Trump Triumphs Over Newsom as California Abolishes Electric Truck Regulation

Trump’s Response to Newsom’s Emission Plans in California

President Donald Trump recently engaged with California Governor Gavin Newsom regarding the latter’s setbacks in promoting electric vehicles.

Back in 2022, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) aimed to push for trucks as a part of Newsom’s electric vehicle initiative. Fast forward to 2023, and Calmatters.org noted that a new regulation was on the table to prohibit diesel truck sales by 2036, with a complete electrification of the state’s trucking fleets expected by 2042.

However, Newsom’s strategies were complicated by opposition from Republicans and pressing economic considerations.

This week, it was reported that the California Air Resources Commission, which holds significant authority over emissions regulations for various sectors, has voted to eliminate the zero-emission purchasing requirement for civilian fleets.

This decision came as the agency faced pressures that might compromise its earlier commitments before Trump’s administration began to assert stricter, more advanced fleet control.

Interestingly, this ruling followed Trump’s earlier cancellation of complementary mandates that forced truck manufacturers to produce more electric models. This action highlights a significant reversal of California’s strategy fueled by Republican influence.

During a recent press conference, Newsom, who often targeted Trump during speeches, attempted to project optimism by stating that the state continues to work towards its electric vehicle objectives.

However, as reported, the sales figures for electric vehicles in the state are underwhelming, casting doubt on the feasibility of a ban on gasoline vehicles by 2035.
