‘Unacceptable’: DHS Launches Inquiry After ICE Officer Pushes Woman to the Ground

ICE Officer Involved in Incident with New York Woman Suspended

An officer from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) who pushed a woman to the ground in New York City has been put on administrative leave as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) looks into the situation, according to a statement released on Friday.

Tricia McLaughlin, a DHS spokesperson, described the incident as troubling. It received widespread attention on social media after being captured on video. The full context of what occurred is still being assessed by the department, emphasizing that their law enforcement professionals are held to high standards. McLaughlin indicated that the officer would not continue in his duties during the investigation.

The incident unfolded in Manhattan’s immigration court when federal agents tried to detain an Ecuadorian man. As his family attempted to intervene, tensions escalated. Witnesses reported that the woman confronted the officer before he forcefully pushed her against a wall and down onto the floor.

During the confrontation, it seems the officer was verbally dismissing the woman, repeatedly saying “adio.”

New York Democratic lawmaker Dan Goldman, who represents the area, expressed his support for disciplinary measures against the officer in a post online. He noted the need for accountability to prevent such occurrences, suggesting that proper action should be taken to address the issue at hand.

Brad Lander, a Democratic New York City council member who was present during the incident, criticized the excessive force used by the officer, stating the woman posed no threat. He insisted that this behavior is unacceptable for law enforcement.

Lander, previously under scrutiny for his own interactions with DHS agents during a separate incident, highlighted the importance of humane treatment, even amidst contentious immigration policies.

As the investigation continues, many are awaiting a clear response from the DHS about the actions to be taken regarding this incident.
