Eastern European Leaders Urge Continued U.S. Military Presence
Leaders from Eastern Europe are calling on President Donald Trump to maintain U.S. troop presence in NATO’s eastern regions, especially following recent Russian air and drone incursions. They argue that Vladimir Putin is “pushing the limits” and suggests that he “only believes what he sees.”
In a discussion with Fox News Digital, ministers from Estonia, Lithuania, and Romania emphasized the need for NATO to solidify its defenses. They propose a transition from passive air policing to a more integrated air and missile defense system. This would involve loosening involvement rules, ensuring a consistent U.S. military presence, and preventing Russia from normalizing its aggressive actions, which could undermine Article 5’s credibility. Their military concerns also include calls for stricter sanctions, alongside efforts to reduce Europe’s energy reliance on Russia.
Their messages arrive as Washington contemplates a national security strategy focused on domestic defense. Prior to recent escalations, U.S. officials had warned their allies about potential reductions in American military presence, urging Europe to take on greater responsibilities.
Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Zakna conveyed that American troops are vital for maintaining peace in the region. He stated, “Putin only understands the language of strength. His goal is to restore the Soviet Empire.”
Recent Russian Breaches
This month, instances of Russian drones violating airspace over Poland and Romania were reported, while a Russian Mig-29, carrying missiles, briefly entered Estonian skies. Additionally, a Russian aircraft was discovered within Alaska’s air defense identification zone for the ninth time this year.
As the U.S. reviews its military posture, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kistis Budri noted that deterrence must be visible, not merely theoretical. He emphasized the importance of a tangible military presence to help reinforce local security.
Warnings from Romania
Romanian Foreign Minister Oana highlighted the significance of Black Sea security, linking it to broader U.S. interests. She argued that while each nation has its priorities, stability on the Eastern front can bolster overall security and economic collaboration, including co-investment in various sectors like energy and cyber defenses.
Romania has even taken measures to intercept Russian drones that threaten its territory, underscoring the importance of NATO’s U.S. presence. Bucharest is also becoming a key regional energy supplier, enhancing its nuclear capabilities with U.S. assistance and exploring natural gas reserves in the Black Sea.
U.S. Military Presence in Europe
Reportedly, around 80,000 American troops are currently stationed across Europe, down from about 105,000 following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The State Department has indicated that Lithuania and Estonia have hosted a sustained U.S. military presence, with around 3,000 troops in Romania.
Despite ongoing speculation about a possible U.S. withdrawal, officials like Ambassador Mike Waltz have reiterated America’s commitment to protecting “any inch” of NATO territory. Trump has suggested a need to respond aggressively to any Russian threats, including proposing measures to assist Ukraine in regaining lost territory.
NATO’s Eastern Sentry Initiative
To counter Russian aggression, NATO initiated the Eastern Sentry program on September 12, 2025. This strategy focuses on coordinated military operations, combining fighter jets, naval resources, and counter-drone systems to address threats from the Baltic to the Black Sea quickly. Unlike static deployments, this mission emphasizes adaptability against evolving challenges.
