The Justice Department recently indicted former FBI director James Comey on two charges, shortly after President Trump suggested to Attorney General Pam Bondi that he should go after his political rivals.
Last week, Trump took to Truth Social to question why figures like Senator Adam Schiff and New York Attorney General Leticia James had not faced indictments. He mused, “We can’t delay it anymore. It’s killing our reputation and reliability.” His post emphasized that while he himself has been indicted multiple times, they had not faced any consequences.
Although he didn’t provide a specific list of potential targets, Trump indicated that he believed other officials might soon be charged, claiming, “These were corrupt, radical left Democrats.” He also criticized the Department of Justice, stating that what was happening was unprecedented and troubling.
Trump’s commentary reflects a longstanding resentment towards a number of perceived adversaries, many of whom have been vocal in wanting him prosecuted.
Adam Schiff
Schiff was one of the individuals named in Trump’s Truth Social post about a week ago. As a key figure in investigating Trump’s actions surrounding January 6, 2021, he has emerged as a prominent adversary for the former president. Trump has previously labeled the inquiry a “hoax” and directed blame at Schiff and others.
Schiff, who sat on committees probing Russian interference in the 2016 election, has faced accusations related to mortgage fraud, which he and his legal team have denied. His criticisms of federal officials have intensified, particularly related to the use of crime referrals in the political sphere.
Leticia James
James has also been accused of misconduct regarding mortgage fraud, which she firmly denies. The DOJ began looking into her actions a few months ago, further complicating the political landscape.
Recently, Trump reportedly terminated a federal prosecutor in Virginia who was involved in an investigation of James that had not produced any charges. Following Comey’s indictment, the Democratic Attorneys General Association created a legal defense fund to support James and other Democratic AGs facing Trump’s scrutiny.
This is not the first time James has clashed with Trump. She won a lawsuit against him, which revealed his inflated asset claims, though a penalty of nearly $355 million was later overturned on appeal.
Trump’s ongoing disputes
Trump has expressed frustration with prosecutors handling his criminal cases for years. He has called for the dismissal of several District Attorneys involved in indicting him, labeling them as politically motivated. He emphasized that crime is rampant in cities like Atlanta and that these prosecutors are engaged in witch hunts against him.
Additionally, he has voiced strong criticisms against figures like Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, suggesting that he is responsible for politically charged prosecutions.
Brennan and Clapper
In a twist, Trump mentioned that criminal referrals were made against former CIA director John Brennan and former DNI James Clapper, hinting they could soon face charges as well.
In a recent interview, he expressed that he wouldn’t be bothered by seeing Comey and Brennan arrested live on television, framing them as criminals deserving of consequences.
George Soros
Trump also called for investigations into Democratic donor George Soros and his son Alexander. He suggested they should face federal charges, citing their financial support for nonprofit organizations that align with leftist causes.
In response to investigations into Soros’s foundations, which have drawn scrutiny from law enforcement, the Open Society Foundations insisted that their activities promote peaceful and legal objectives, rejecting any claims of funding terrorism.
