Michigan High School Soccer Player Welcomed Back After Injury

A high school soccer player in Michigan, who suffered a broken spine after being tackled during a game, was joyfully reunited with his teammates at St. Joseph High School’s Dickinson Stadium last Friday.

Colton Mims, a 15-year-old player for the Lakeshore Lancers, made his way to the sidelines in a wheelchair to cheer on his teammates. His mother, Courtney Mims, shared the moment on Facebook, expressing her joy at seeing him back on the field: “First time in the field since!!! That’s my big baby!”

Mims, wearing his No. 68 jersey, observed the game from the visitor’s sidelines alongside another injured teammate, just over a week after sustaining two fractures in his spine during a match.

“He is an angel. His teammates are the best example of a young man I’ve seen in a long time,” Courtney reflected, proud of her son.

The St. Joseph community organized a heartfelt welcome for him, including prayer circles for injured athletes before the game. Courtney expressed gratitude for their support, saying, “I couldn’t have been better blessed with my SJ mom, who let me know that they had sorted this out.” It was a bittersweet moment as he watched his team compete in the “War by the Shore” tournament. Afterward, the Lakeshore team greeted him with high fives.

During the match on September 18, Mims suffered a serious injury while playing defense against Kalamazoo Central High School, when he collided with a large opposing player. He was quickly taken off the field and transported to a hospital due to his injuries, described by some as the result of “illegal movements.”

In a twist, one Kalamazoo player, Rhys Biske, criticized the actions of his teammates, describing the move as a misguided celebratory stunt rather than intentional harm. His comments reflected an attempt to clarify the intentions behind the tackle, emphasizing there was no malicious intent.

The disturbing footage of the incident went viral, leading to public outrage, with calls for accountability. Biske mentioned that his teammates have faced threats online and backlash regarding the incident. In response, Kalamazoo Central High School announced it would take strong actions against those involved. However, due to privacy laws, the specifics were not disclosed, leading to further frustration among the Lakeshore community. The district extended an apology for the unacceptable behavior and promised serious consequences for the students involved.
