Trump and Netanyahu Set for Talks Amid Gaza Ceasefire Efforts
President Donald Trump is set to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Monday, with discussions aimed at addressing the ceasefire and ongoing conflict in Gaza.
In a preview of the meeting, Trump expressed optimism, stating, “We have a real opportunity for greatness in the Middle East.”
Although Trump did not go into specifics regarding ceasefire conditions or plans for demilitarization, he indicated that both Israel and Hamas are open to indirect talks, which are scheduled to take place in Qatar this week.
Vice President JD Vance shared insights during an interview on “Fox News Sunday,” stating that U.S. officials are currently engaged in “very complicated” negotiations with both Israeli and Arab representatives.
Vance conveyed a sense of cautious optimism, saying, “I feel more optimistic about where we are now than where we were at in the last few months, but let’s be realistic. These things can be derailed at the very last minute.”
The Trump administration aims to achieve three main goals in the talks: securing the release of all hostages, neutralizing threats from Hamas to Israel, and increasing humanitarian aid to Gaza. Vance noted, “I think it’s close to achieving all three of these objectives.”
In a recent exclusive interview with Fox News, Netanyahu emphasized the urgency of ensuring hostage releases, a priority for Israeli leadership. He mentioned, “We want to free the hostages, so we hope we can give it a try. We want to remove the Hamas rules, disarm them, and set a new future for both Gazan and the Israelis.”
This will be the third meeting between Trump and Netanyahu since the beginning of the year, occurring shortly after the UN General Assembly. During Netanyahu’s recent address at the assembly, many UN representatives walked out, resulting in rows of empty seats.
Following this, member states voted to allow Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to speak remotely, during which he condemned Israel as committing “genocide” and sought full UN membership for Palestine.
