Solo individual who intervened to halt the vicious assault on an elderly worker at a rap concert explains his actions: 'It needed to be done'

Public Reaction to Concert Assault

A week ago, videos began circulating online showing a young man attacking an elderly worker at a concert in Kansas City. This incident drew considerable attention as the footage depicted the violent assault, which involved multiple strikes to the worker’s face and head.

The brutal event occurred two days ago during a rap concert featuring NBA Youngboy at the T-Mobile Center. Authorities confirmed that the suspect involved is a minor, under the age of 16.

Thomas Schlange, the 66-year-old victim, was captured in the video trying to fend off the much younger attacker. Unfortunately, he found himself on the ground, outmatched and defenseless, stuck between rows of seats.

In a moment of intervention, a man identified as Antonio Crater intervened, pulling the teenager away from Schlange. He explained to local news why he felt compelled to act. “It was something that had to be done,” Crater stated. “I have a family of that age. This is unacceptable. I was raised with values.”

Crater detailed how the assault escalated, with the teenager being aggressive right from the start, eventually landing punches on Schlange. “[The boy] just pushed him, he just spits out and pushed him,” Crater recalled.

Following the incident, Schlange told reporters, “I hit my head” and conveyed his urgency to protect the concertgoers. His emotions were raw; he expressed frustration at being unable to stop the attack sooner.

As for the motivation behind the attack, witnesses, including local pastor Robert McDaniel, mentioned that it stemmed from a ticket dispute. The young man was reportedly asked to move from a seat that did not match his ticket. McDaniel remarked on the broader implications, noting a disturbing trend of unmanaged emotions becoming evident in today’s youth.

Police confirmed that the teenage suspect was taken into custody but later released to a guardian. They are pursuing further investigation to determine the appropriate charges. There was a report that the assailant had also attacked a security guard earlier that night when asked to leave the venue.

Sadly, incidents like this can reflect larger issues in society. The emotional and mental struggles of youth today may require more attention, emphasizing the importance of teaching emotional regulation and conflict resolution.
