New York City Mayor Eric Adams has officially ended his long-shot reelection campaign, stirring varied opinions among analysts regarding the implications for socialists in the mayoral race. In a video posted on social media, he acknowledged the end of his bid and issued a warning about the dangers of dismantling established systems, which, he suggested, are crucial to the city.
This decision follows recent polls indicating Adams trailing behind opponents like Mamdani, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, and Republican contender Curtis Sliwa. Some experts discussed how Adams’ exit might reshape the race for the leadership of America’s largest city. “If we were to look at it through the lens of Cuomo and Mamdani, things would likely be much closer than those backing Mamdani would prefer,” noted Sam Kay from a Republican consulting firm. He emphasized the tight competition observed in the polls, positing that now, Sliwa could stand out in a direct matchup.
“A lingering question is whether Sliwa will be pressured to exit,” Kay added. “The data seems to suggest that Adams’ supporters might lean towards Sliwa rather than Cuomo, which is quite interesting.” This sentiment mirrors recent praise for Sliwa from Mamdani.
While the campaigns of Mamdani and Cuomo have not commented, some Republicans are reportedly pushing Sliwa to withdraw in hopes of a one-on-one battle between the two Democratic candidates. Although pressure is mounting, Sliwa has made it clear he intends to remain in the race. “With Mayor Adams stepping aside, this changes the landscape entirely,” Sliwa remarked, asserting that New Yorkers deserve leadership devoid of corruption.
Interestingly, in early September, there were discussions involving Trump officials reaching out to Adams regarding potential participation in the administration. However, Adams did not address this matter at a press conference.
Some political analysts, including Adam Weiss, suggested that despite Adams being a significant name, his departure may not drastically impact the race’s dynamics. “If it really turns into a one-on-one, it does change things, but New York’s demographic shifts over time complicate the scenario,” he mentioned.
Mamdani’s support among Democrats has been noteworthy, although some party members have expressed disapproval of his far-left agenda. House Speaker Mike Johnson previously indicated that while Mamdani’s ideological stance could pose challenges for New York City, it might benefit House Republicans. Trump also weighed in, stating that Mamdani’s candidacy is advantageous for the GOP.
A political consultant characterized Mamdani’s views as potentially harmful to democracy, suggesting they lean more towards radicalism. Meanwhile, he observed that many feel compelled to consider which candidate genuinely addresses street-level issues, hinting at Mamdani’s current advantage in that regard.
Support for Curtis Sliwa appears strong among certain constituencies. Assemblyman Dov Hikind remarked on Sliwa’s appeal, voicing hope for his success in the upcoming race. The discussion around Cuomo remains contentious, especially in light of his resignation amid serious allegations in 2021, which a recent report noted he might reconsider if given another chance.
Some Democrats believe experiencing the consequences of poor governance could ultimately benefit the Republican party in New York.
