Cuomo and Mamdani exchange barbs as the NYC mayoral race changes after Adams' departure

Mayoral Race Heats Up in New York City

Zohran Mamdani, the frontrunner in New York City’s mayoral race, has taken aim at Andrew Cuomo, branding him a “communist” and criticizing his “disgraceful record.” This comes amidst a two-candidate showdown as Mayor Eric Adams lags behind. Mamdani’s comments underscore recent polling, where Cuomo is attempting to distance himself from President Donald Trump’s influence.

“It’s not just the polling numbers; it’s about the substance behind them. What Andrew Cuomo represents is a history of unfulfilled promises and disgrace,” Mamdani stated to journalists.

Cuomo’s spokesperson, Rich Azzopaldi, shot back, accusing Mamdani of lying and claiming he owes the public an explanation for his past actions, including a recent promise to apologize for remarks related to NYPD and public safety threats.

“Deserves New York”: Mamdani’s Challenge to Adams

Mamdani expressed concerns over the impact of Cuomo’s decisions, particularly regarding cuts to a $65 million advantage program amid a state budget exceeding $100 billion. He highlighted the cruelty of such decisions, emphasizing that New Yorkers want a shift away from this past.

Almost immediately after Adams suspended his reelection campaign, Mamdani held a press conference with Kasha Phillips Lewis, a New Yorker who faced homelessness due to Cuomo’s funding cuts for rental assistance. “This situation was created during a severe budget shortfall back when Mamdani was in college. Yet, funding for rental assistance has fluctuated significantly since then,” Cuomo’s campaign remarked in response.

Azzopaldi further alleged that Mamdani is evading accountability for his more recent actions related to domestic violence response efforts, which indicates a pattern of inconsistency with his previous statements.

Rising Tensions in the Mayoral Race

It’s noteworthy that Republican candidate Curtis Swa has not dropped out, but Mamdani solidly positioned the race as a two-horse competition, with Adams now sidelined. Current polling shows Mamdani leading with 45% support, while Swa is at 11% and Adams at 8%.

The stakes are rising, especially after Adams’ departure from the race. Polls suggest that even a fraction of Adams’ supporters voting for Cuomo would still place Mamdani ahead significantly.

“Too often, we normalize the struggles of the homeless, but this is a deliberate choice — a choice made repeatedly by people like Andrew Cuomo,” Mamdani commented, reflecting the systemic issues at play.

Mamdani also criticized Trump’s ongoing agenda, stating that Cuomo’s presence is more of a boon for Trump than anything else in New York City. “Many New Yorkers see Cuomo as a snake and a liar, and they want to turn that page,” he said.

In a recent post, Trump remarked on Mamdani’s campaign, indicating that he views it as an advantageous situation for Republicans. “He needs resources from me as president to keep his unrealistic promises,” Trump argued.

Mamdani brushed off Trump’s statements, suggesting they indicate a “sadness” toward his campaign rather than a serious critique. The battle for New York’s mayoralty appears set to intensify in the coming weeks.
