US Marines Meet Recruitment Goals Thanks to High Standards
The US Marines have successfully met their recruitment targets for the fiscal year, largely crediting their achievements to an “atypical” emphasis on the high standards set during the Trump administration.
In 2025, the Marines brought in 30,536 active and reserve recruits and moderated the influx of candidates to better demonstrate their training capabilities. They stand firmly by their rigorous standards, which many believe are a key component of their recruitment success.
“Where I’m located, people know that the Marines maintain very high standards, and we are committed to upholding them,” said Lt. Gen. William Bowers in a comment to the Associated Press. “If you try to appeal to everyone, you might miss out on attracting the individuals you truly want.”
Recently, Hegseth issued several directives aimed at reinforcing military-wide standards, including requiring physical training tests at least twice a year for all soldiers. There has been a significant drive within the Pentagon to not only elevate military standards but also to address aspects like facial hair regulations and overall soldier conduct.
Interestingly, both the Army and Air Force reached their recruitment targets ahead of schedule this fiscal year, a trend that is evident across the military since the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, recruitment has faced challenges in all military branches, attributed by some critics to the Biden Administration’s policies, which they believe may have dissuaded potential recruits. The Army, for instance, fell short of its recruitment benchmark by around 25% in 2022.
The Marines have not yet responded to requests for comment regarding their recruitment successes.
