Delano Squires Questions Caller on DEI Perspectives
On a recent C-Span segment, Delano Squires from the Heritage Foundation posed a thought-provoking question to a caller named Anwar, inquiring if he considered himself a “DEI hire.” This exchange occurred against the backdrop of the Biden administration’s push for enhanced diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, which saw significant Democratic support and investment in various federal programs aimed at these goals.
Anwar, while critiquing Squires’ viewpoint, ultimately asked if he believed his position was merely a “rental for heritage.” In response, Squires emphasized, “I don’t view myself as a product of DEI. I have earned the respect of my colleagues, and my work speaks for itself. I’ve been invested in these discussions since I was 15 and have professionally addressed these issues for over a decade.”
He continued by expressing concern that some individuals who advocate for black people may actually use DEI to undermine those they disagree with, which he found to be quite intriguing.
Despite efforts made by Democrats to bolster DEI in various sectors, a recent AP-NORC poll from July revealed a significant skepticism among both black and Hispanic participants regarding the effectiveness of these programs. Many respondents felt that DEI might actually increase discrimination against minorities instead.
The survey, which included 1,437 adults, showed that fewer than half of Americans view DEI as beneficial to those it aims to support, according to PBS. Among the findings, about 40% of black respondents and one-third of Hispanic respondents believed DEI could exacerbate discrimination against black individuals. Similarly, around 25% of white adults shared this perspective. Additionally, the data highlighted stark divisions among white, black, and Hispanic adults regarding discrimination against Hispanics.
