The man recently arrested for a deadly stabbing incident at a Redwood train platform has a troubling history involving violent felonies.
Jose Gomez Bustamante, accused of fatally stabbing 66-year-old Joseph Michael Carreiro at the Redwood City Caltrain Station, is a parolee from a previous knife-related offense.
The 31-year-old suspect was taken into custody on August 28 and is currently being held at Maguire Correctional Facility on murder charges.
This isn’t Gomez Bustamante’s first violent incident. In 2020, he admitted guilt to felony assault with a deadly weapon after he tried to stab an employee at Taqueria Eltourenze using a kitchen knife.
Authorities mentioned that this attack seemed unprovoked. In fact, Gomez Bustamante’s mother informed police that he had been experiencing hallucinations.
In June 2023, he received a six-year prison sentence, but according to records, he was released on parole on April 8, 2025, after serving 702 days due to good behavior and involvement in a treatment program.
Moreover, this 2020 incident was part of a larger pattern. Reports state that Gomez Bustamante has a long-standing criminal record with various parole violations.
In 2012, he faced charges related to a gang assault that resulted in serious injuries, but ultimately was sentenced to only three months in prison and three years of probation after avoiding a more severe felony assault charge.
He did earn credits for “fun time” spent in jail, which amounted to 69 days and 68 days, respectively.
After just six months on probation, Gomez Bustamante violated the terms and served another 120 days in prison but was released on parole shortly afterward. Then, he faced additional charges including driving under the influence and hit-and-run incidents.
According to reports, he has a DUI charge as part of a plea deal, resulting in a 30-day sentence and an additional two years for parole violations.
In 2015, Gomez Bustamante was charged with robbery and possession of drugs with intent to distribute. While awaiting trial in prison that year, he was reportedly involved in a gang assault that hospitalized two rival gang members and injured four correctional officers.
