Street ambassador in San Francisco killed while addressing a drug user near the library

Tragic Death of San Francisco Street Ambassador

In a heartbreaking incident, a street ambassador from San Francisco, Joey Alexander, who had spent 23 years in prison, was shot dead by a man he confronted about drug use near a child outside the public library. This event unfolded on Friday, as he was advocating for a safer environment in front of the main branch of the San Francisco Public Library. The organization Urban Alchemy, where he worked, reported the details through spokesman Jess Montejano.

Unfortunately, the 60-year-old father succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday. Montejano shared his dedication, noting, “It was his beat, right in front of the library. He showed up for work every day during his shift.” According to reports, when Alexander approached the man about ceasing drug use, the individual yelled out an angry phrase and drew a shotgun from his bag, shooting Alexander in the torso.

In the wake of the tragedy, San Francisco police arrested 42-year-old Edmund Bowen on suspicion of murder, with potential charges likely to be pursued soon.

Founded in 2018, Urban Alchemy has been working to address crime and drug use in some of the city’s toughest neighborhoods, employing individuals, many with prison backgrounds, to help make a difference. Alexander had spent his previous years incarcerated due to gang-related murders, as his brother reflected in a conversation with the Chronicle.

Having left San Quentin shortly after Christmas in 2022, he had been making strides as an ambassador for about two years. His brother, Marvin, spoke fondly of him, saying, “He wanted to make amends for his past. No matter what he was doing, it was the right thing to do. He loved his job.” Sadly, he is reported to be the third Urban Alchemy employee to lose their life in the line of duty.

Montejano added that there’s a palpable sense of fear among the Urban Alchemy community. “It’s easy to see yourself in Mr. Alexander’s situation,” he remarked. Alexander leaves behind two sons. Mayor Daniel Luley honored him, stating, “Our ambassador dedicated his life to helping those on the streets. Joey Alexander gave his life for that.”
