Recall of Prepared Meals Due to Listeria Outbreak

Concerns over potential government shutdowns could affect the release of the September employment report. Meanwhile, news has emerged about the thinnest iPhone yet passing bend tests, and Maxwell House’s plans to rename National Coffee Day.

A recent listeria outbreak has been linked to specific meals sold at Trader Joe’s and Walmart. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports four deaths and 19 hospitalizations related to these items.

The CDC has announced a multi-state recall of prepackaged meals, which include pasta potentially contaminated with Listeria. Among the recalled products is the “Market Side Ring-In with Beef Meatballs and Marinara Sauce,” packaged in a 12-ounce tray at Walmart; this recall was first issued in June.

Another affected item is “Trader Joe’s Cajun Style Blackened Chicken Breast Fettuccine Alfredo.”

Health Warnings Over Listeria Outbreak

An update from the CDC indicated that the outbreak consists of 20 cases across 15 states, resulting in four deaths.

According to the CDC, any recalled products should no longer be for sale. If you’ve recently purchased them, you should either discard or return them to where they were bought.

Consumers are advised against eating the affected foods and should thoroughly clean refrigerators and surfaces that might have come into contact with contaminated items. It’s important to remember that Listeria can thrive in a refrigerator, potentially spreading to other foods.

Other Recalls and Safety Concerns

There are concerns regarding shrimp sold across 31 states, which have been recalled due to radioactive contamination worries.

Especially vulnerable populations include pregnant women, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems, as Listeria can lead to severe conditions known as invasive listeriosis when it spreads from the intestines.

The CDC urges those who may be at risk to reach out to their healthcare providers if they experience symptoms like headaches, stiff necks, confusion, loss of balance, cramps, fever, muscle pain, or fatigue.

Kraft Heinz Issues Recall of Oscar Mayer Products

Kraft Heinz has recalled over 367,000 pounds of Oscar Mayer Turkey Bacon due to similar concerns with Listeria.

Patients, particularly pregnant women, need to consult their healthcare providers if they exhibit any symptoms such as fever, muscle pain, or fatigue, as mild illnesses from Listeria can lead to serious outcomes like miscarriage or severe illness in newborns.

Symptoms of Listeria infection can appear anywhere from the same day to ten weeks after consuming contaminated food.
