Kamala Harris sought advice from Bill and Hillary Clinton about choosing a running mate

Kamala Harris Shares Insights in New Memoir

In her latest memoir, Kamala Harris, the former vice president, opens up about her decision-making process for selecting a running mate. Before ultimately choosing Tim Walz, the Democratic governor of Minnesota, she reached out to Bill and Hillary Clinton for guidance.

Titled “107 Days,” Harris’ memoir offers an in-depth look at her shortened presidential campaign in 2024. Released on September 23, the book highlights that Harris had just 94 days before the voting began.

“Leah, not many have faced this kind of decision,” Harris recalls telling Hillary and Bill Clinton, noting their familiarity with the intricacies of such choices. The former president cautioned her against choosing someone who could be perceived as merely a “convenience political marriage.”

“You have this unique ability to bring fun energy to your campaign,” Clinton advised. “Make sure your choice doesn’t oppose that.” During their conversation, she pointed out that the true nature of relationships is often visible to the public, whether they’re genuine partnerships or politically motivated.

Harris reflected that during her campaign with Al Gore, they were seen as opposites, yet they worked well together, each bringing something different to the table. She emphasized the importance of understanding candidates during the vetting process, recalling Clinton’s advice on how to gauge potential running mates’ responses.

Ultimately, Harris decided on Walz, describing him as a relatively lesser-known figure yet one she affectionately called her “Happy Warrior” during the campaign.

“I had to be sure that my choice valued everyone’s dignity and took the time to demonstrate that,” she concluded in one of her chapters.

Critics have noted that Walz’s choice to run against better-known Democrats was viewed as a misstep, contributing to the party’s difficulties in the election against Donald Trump. Some expressed concerns over his earlier pandemic leadership and debate performances.

Throughout her memoir, Harris mentions the Clintons multiple times, suggesting an evolving relationship with them, especially as issues with President Biden surface. She believes in the need for guidance from those who’ve walked similar paths, acknowledging that such support is sometimes lacking in politics.

During a book event in New York, she shared that Clinton was among the first contacts Biden reached out to after dropping out of the race in July 2024. “That was a memorable moment,” Harris said, reminiscing about calling them and getting Bill’s presence in the background.

Harris noted the couple expressed their willingness to campaign alongside her, highlighting Clinton’s eagerness to even take an Amtrak trip to support her efforts.

However, complex sentiments surround Harris’ remarks about Clinton and the political landscape, as some suggest her remarks have a hint of criticism amid ongoing tensions with allies of the Biden administration.
