Far-Left Groups Respond to Trump’s Memo on Domestic Terrorism
Dozens of left-leaning nonprofits have come together to express their disapproval of President Trump’s recent memorandum, which focuses on domestic terrorism and political violence. Their open letter critiques the President’s approach, stating that while political violence should not be tolerated, his attempts to undermine organizations he disapproves of are alarming and dangerous.
The memo, released on September 25, outlines a “national strategy” aimed at examining and dismantling groups deemed to incite political violence. It grants authority to the National Joint Terrorism Task Force to explore potential federal offenses related to the recruiting and radicalization of individuals for violent purposes.
In the memo, Trump argues that various forms of violent actions are often hidden under a facade of anti-fascism, allowing the labeling of foundational American values as “fascist” to legitimize revolutionary violence. He alludes to an organized effort and underlying motives of political violence that include anti-American, anti-capitalist, and anti-Christian sentiments.
In response to the memo, many signatory organizations have ties to movements for social justice and reforms. Some of these groups have previously supported protests that challenged police actions or advocated for various political causes. Notable among the signatories are several chapters of the Council on America and Islamic Relations (CAIR), as well as the Palestinian American Muslims, both of whom have voiced strong opposition to Trump’s initiatives.
Additionally, criticism emerged from other activist organizations that focus on issues of racial justice and immigrant rights. For instance, the Sunrise Movement, a youth-led group, has made demands for police abolition and criticized federal immigration enforcement as violent. Their response also highlights recent spikes in anti-ICE protests in cities like Los Angeles and Portland, linking them back to Trump’s memo.
The memo intensified scrutiny over the actions and funding sources of several groups involved in social activism. Some of these organizations have engaged in discussions regarding minors and gender-related medical procedures, an increasingly contentious issue amid Trump’s administration. Various nonprofits focus on providing support and funding for transgender youth within this climate of heightened regulation and scrutiny.
Concurrently, some signatories of the letter oppose Trump’s policies and initiatives on multiple fronts, including environmental justice and social equity, suggesting a broad coalition of dissent against his administration. In summary, the President’s approach to addressing what he perceives as a threat has sparked significant backlash, illustrating ongoing tensions around political violence and social movements in America today.
