Yankees face tough lessons in the bullpen after Game 1 defeat to Blue Jays in ALDS.

Yankees’ Bullpen Performance in Game 1 Against the Blue Jays

In Toronto, a game that initially seemed competitive shifted as the Yankees aimed to get a better understanding of their bullpen, which had seen minimal mention during the wild card round.

Much of the focus fell on Tim Hill and Kamilo Doval, who both provided some promising insights.

On the flip side, the performances from Luke Weaver in his second postseason outing and Paul Blackburn in his debut were concerning.

The relief corps, brought in to finish what Lewis Gill had started, faced a tough night, ultimately losing 10-1 to the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre.

Overall, the Yankees continued to evaluate their bullpen after a matchup with the Red Sox. Some highlights included David Bednar, who appeared in all three games, along with Devin Williams and Fernando Cruz, who had strong outings in the opening contests.

Amid this effort, Hill and Doval stood out, suggesting they might be able to earn some trust moving forward.

Hill managed three innings and handled two tricky situations against Alejandro Kirk effectively. He returned in the fourth and retired the Blue Jays with just 13 pitches.

Although Hill had struggled with consistency earlier in the season after being traded from the Giants, he asserted himself well in this outing.

Doval’s ERA was less than stellar at 4.82 over 22 games with the Yankees, but he didn’t show any nerves in this critical scenario. He faced nine batters, contributing to his longest outing yet, which included three groundouts, two flyouts, and a line drive.

Trouble struck in the seventh inning when Weaver issued a walk followed by two singles.

Despite previously being seen as a reliable closer, Weaver’s struggles were highlighted as a key concern for the Yankees. Meanwhile, Blackburn, unexpectedly included on the roster, seemed to get less opportunity than anticipated.

Unfortunately, Blackburn squandered what little goodwill he had built, giving up four runs on six hits in the seventh and eighth innings.
