Trump Endorses Miyares, Criticizes Jones
President Donald Trump has expressed his support for Virginia’s Republican Attorney General, Jason Miyares, while urging Democratic opponent Jay Jones to withdraw from the race. This came after remarks made by Jones about filming a Republican politician sparked controversy.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump referred to a 2022 communication he had with Carrie Coiner, a Republican member of the Virginia House. This communication highlighted a report that claimed a Republican legislator had sued a Democratic colleague. Jones commented that if he had the option to film “Two Dictators” or a former Virginia Republican leader, Todd Gilbert, he would choose Gilbert.
Trump made it clear that he fully supports Miyares, criticizing Jones for what he described as “radical left madness.” He emphasized that Jones’ comments were inappropriate and suggested that he should step aside from the race, as even some Democrats agree on the troubling nature of what was said.
In a response to the controversy, Jones expressed remorse, saying he was sorry for his comments and understood why they might concern voters. He noted that those remarks could impact public perception of his candidacy.
Miyares, reacting to the fallout, stated that Jones had demonstrated recklessness and a willingness to compromise his integrity, which, in his view, disqualifies him from serving as Attorney General. Miyares also reinforced the importance of integrity in law enforcement, describing the emotional toll on families affected by violent crime.
“Previously, the race was about different views on public safety,” Miyares remarked, “but now it seems to hinge on fundamental qualifications for office.” The implications of these events could shape the future of the election in Virginia.
