Former soccer player Mark Sanchez was reportedly discharged from the hospital and taken directly to jail after being accused of attacking an elderly man.
At 38 years old, Sanchez left the hospital Sunday morning, where he had been treated for a persistent stab wound to his chest from an incident on Friday night.
However, he didn’t get to enjoy any kind of celebrity treatment. Instead, he was taken to the Marion County Jail, where he was already facing charges related to public intoxication and battery.
Although Sanchez managed to post a $300 cash bond before being formally booked, it seems he won’t be spending much time behind bars.
According to police, he allegedly assaulted a 69-year-old grease truck driver who was collecting trash behind a restaurant in Indianapolis.
Witnesses say Sanchez was in a hurry and grew angry when the truck blocked his path. Things escalated when the driver, unable to hear Sanchez—who was intoxicated and had removed his hearing aids—was shoved to the ground with a trash can.
The driver reportedly thought, “This guy is trying to kill me,” and felt compelled to react in self-defense.
Police reports indicate that prior to the stabbing, the driver had tried to fend Sanchez off with pepper spray, claiming Sanchez continued to pursue him.
Photos from the scene depict a visibly injured elderly man in a hospital bed, with a neck brace and severe facial injuries.
His family mentioned he suffered a cut during the confrontation, which damaged his tongue.
Sanchez had been in serious condition upon his initial hospitalization, but was later reported to be stable.
He was in Indianapolis for work as a Fox Sports Analyst, but told authorities he couldn’t remember the events leading to his arrest, as noted in the arrest affidavit.
