Texas Sends National Guard to Support Federal Employees Amid Protests
Texas has dispatched 400 members of the National Guard to assist federal authorities, following President Donald Trump’s ban on federalizing troops to protect ICE facilities in Portland, Oregon. Governor Greg Abbott announced the deployment late Sunday, emphasizing the need for security.
“I have authorized the president to call in 400 members of the Texas State Guard to ensure federal employees are safe,” Abbott said. He went on to state that the Texas National Guard possesses unmatched training and skills, which are essential for this mission. Abbott also assured that many National Guardsmen remain active in Texas, supporting border security.
Either you fully implement protections for federal employees, or you rely on the Texas Guard to fulfill that role. They take pride in serving and protecting our nation.
Protests, primarily led by groups associated with Antifa, have caused disruptions at ICE facilities in Portland, generating significant media coverage of the unrest. The local police have been criticized for their ineffective response to the situation, with reports of protesters threatening drivers attempting to navigate through the area.
A federal judge named Karin recently intervened, placing a ban on Trump’s authorization for the Oregon and California National Guards to protect ICE facilities. She argued this move could blur the line between civilian and military authority, potentially leading to martial law.
Democratic politicians expressed their concerns as well, with California Governor Gavin Newsom labeling the actions as “authoritarian propaganda.” He was quick to point out the need for accountability among Trump’s advisors, citing Stephen Miller specifically.
On Sunday, the judge expanded the ruling to prevent any calls for the state’s National Guard to proceed to Portland. Trump’s legal team plans to challenge this in California’s 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.
Meanwhile, in Portland, federal law enforcement began to take action, pursuing and arresting protesters as tensions escalated. Trump has condemned the unrest, holding those responsible for the violence accountable for severe penalties.
