Police in Australia Take Guns from 'Sovereign Citizen' Activists

Authorities in Western Australia are intensifying measures against firearm ownership among those aligned with the Sovereign Citizens movement, a group that disputes the validity of government.

A suspect tied to these beliefs is wanted in connection with the tragic deaths of two police officers in Victoria this past August.

A 56-year-old man named Desi Freeman, widely recognized in Australian social media circles as a conspiracy theorist and anti-government figure, is the primary suspect in this case. His online presence has surged notably during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Freeman, originally named Desmond Christopher Philby, reportedly began to adopt more radical viewpoints following government mandates related to the pandemic, as noted by neighbors.

“He went through a transformation,” recalled a local. “Previously, he was just your everyday guy, but then he turned into someone quite odd.”

Freeman became a vocal adversary of government authorities, aligning himself with the Sovereign Citizens movement, which essentially rejects government authority, including taxes and police directives.

Before the pandemic, Freeman had a history of minor legal issues mainly related to driving. However, more concerning behavior emerged afterward, such as attempting to order police to arrest a judge over a court issue related to national park access.

In December 2021, he initiated a lawsuit against Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews, accusing him of “treason” over his pandemic measures. The court swiftly dismissed the case, though some of his online supporters erroneously believed it to be a legitimate stance.

These conspiracy theories gained traction when Freeman was arrested for illegal protests outside a courthouse in 2021; he claimed the government was conspiring to silence him.

On August 26, ten police officers arrived at Freeman’s rural property near Porepunkah to execute a search warrant. The specifics are not public, but Freeman was living there in a bus with his wife Amalia and two children.

When police attempted to carry out the search, Freeman resisted, which led to a confrontation. Reports indicate he opened fire, resulting in the deaths of two officers and injuries to a third, while he and his wife fled the scene.

Amalia Freeman and her teenage son were briefly detained, but Desi Freeman remains at large, possibly armed. Despite his wife’s pleas for him to surrender, he is now the target of a significant manhunt involving numerous local and federal officers, alongside military support.

The public was initially warned to steer clear of areas where Freeman might hide. As days passed without sightings, authorities lifted some restrictions. Freeman’s brother mentioned he fears Desi may have perished in the cold wilderness, although the search has not yet been called off.

In light of these events, Western Australia Police recently announced the conclusion of an operation aimed at confiscating firearms from at least 70 individuals affiliated with the Sovereign Citizens movement. Over 135 weapons were seized, along with 44 firearm licenses suspended.

“Following the recent tragic deaths of the officers in Victoria, I’ve instructed our team to reassess potential risks posed by firearm holders in our state who identify with these beliefs,” remarked a police spokesperson.

He added that, while Freeman’s case has garnered significant media attention, there have been instances in the past three years where six police officers across four states have been shot by civilian actors. Australia’s gun laws are quite strict, with Western Australia introducing some of the toughest regulations in the country last year.

“If someone openly declares they don’t intend to follow our laws, they cannot be considered a responsible gun owner,” he emphasized.

Police Minister Reece Whitby expressed concern that those associated with the Sovereign Citizens movement threaten public safety as they oppose the very laws that uphold a free society.
